Abstract


Vietnam’s economic renovation has recorded many successes, of which foreign trade plays its part. Based on the systematic and reliable statistics as well as an in-depth and comparable analysis, the article presents the status of Vietnam’s import - exports performance in the 1976-2000 period, and analyses the relationships between foreign trade and the agricultural and industrial production and suggests a series of solution. The remarkable successes of Vietnam’s foreign trade in the 1991-2000 period include a reduction of trade deficits and an annual export growth of 23 per cent on average. Nevertheless Vietnam’s foreign trades have basically relied mainly on the exports of raw materials; these weaknesses are simply because of the natural outcome of an appropriate structure of the economy in general, and of industrial and agricultural structure in particular.
